Seasonal Wildlife Technician

Company: Green Diamond Resource Company
Location: Korbel
Posted on: March 11, 2023

Job Description:

This job starts in April and ends in August.
Who you are: You enjoy being outdoors and have a passion for working in wildlife. You enjoy field work and in your personal life enjoy camping, backpacking and hiking. You have a positive attitude, good work ethic, aptitude to learn new skills, and are comfortable navigating to remote forest settings by yourself at night. It's helpful if you have developed the ability to identify owl species by sound too.

What the job is: This job is focused on conducting Northern Spotted and Barred Owl surveys as required by Green Diamond's Habitat Conservation Plan and other pre-harvest raptor surveys as required by the California Forest Practice Rules for Timber Harvest Planning and Operations. You will be working 90% of the time in the field. The ideal candidate may have some knowledge in conducting owl or other types of raptor surveys. Experience with sage grouse monitoring is very similar to what we do here at Green Diamond with the remote night work, breeding observations and ATV use. You will get plenty of job training prior to the start of the season. Your safety is our number one priority so training includes all the safety aspects of the job as well. We have protocols for everything.

Work schedule: This job is mostly night work as you see in the schedule below. The start and end times in your day will fluctuate based on the time of year.

  • April through May
    • 80% night work conducting broadcast surveys
    • Work includes data submissions, prepping for the field, scouting survey locations, and conducting daytime spotted owl (NSO) demographic surveys
    • Average 10-hour days, 5 days per week plus frequent weekend work (1 day per weekend at 6-8 hours with emphasis on NSO demographic surveys)
    • June through August
      • Average 10-hour days, 5 days per week
      • Similar work as April through May, with higher percentage spent on night surveys

Where you'll work: You will be working on nearly 397,0000 acres of Green Diamond's privately held forest property, located in Humboldt and Del Norte Counties along the Northern California coast. Our offices are nestled in the redwood forest near the Pacific Ocean.

        Compensation:
The rate for this job is $20.00 per hour. Green Diamond offers a few benefits for seasonal jobs. These include participation in the 401(k) plan with match and access to the Employee Assistance Program. Paid days off include company holidays that occur during the season, up to 2 floating (personal) holidays and 3 days of bereavement leave and 2 days unpaid bereavement. Sick leave is available to take once you start. It accrues at 3.08 hours every pay period. We provide a company vehicle for business use.
