We are looking for a Patient Access Area Supervisor for the Admitting Department at St. Joseph Hospital Eureka. Location: Eureka, CA Work Schedule: Full Time - 80 Biweekly Hours Shift: 8-hour, Days Job Summary: Under the immediate direction of the Manager, Patient Access the Emergency Room Registration Supervisor assumes responsibility for supervisory activities of the Patient Registration/PBX Communications Staff. The Supervisor is technically competent and cross-trained in all areas of patient registration, demonstrates and adheres to department standards, understands the bargaining union contract and serves as an administrative and technical/clerical resource to department staff which includes ancillary registration areas. The Supervisor is the first contact to staff has independent judgment, providing support and immediate/timely feedback, coaching and guidance. She/he understands the importance and regulations of EMTALA and HIPAA compliance. The Supervisor will work shifts when other coverage is not available and can provide documentation that all staff had an opportunity to work in accordance with the union contract. Interacts with infant, child, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients in an age-appropriate manner. Essential Functions: Helps interview and hire new staff members. Trains all new hires to ensure all essential training needs are met. Participates with staff annual performance appraisals. Prepares and schedules monthly staff meetings and writes meeting minutes. Monitors staff performance to ensure that all accounts have the insurance verify, par/tars obtained, and that private pay/deductible deposits are requested on all visits. Performs random account audits to verify that registrations conform to the defined policies and procedures of the registration process and are at a ready-to-bill status at the time for the patients discharge. Maintains standard work. Skills: Effective communication skills to be used with physicians, staff, patients and colleagues. Strong command of written English, including the ability to proofread and edit written documents such as physicians orders, policies and procedures, standard work, safety regulations and routine correspondence. Excellent spelling, and alphabetical sequencing skills are required. Accurate computer entry at 35-40 wpm. Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel programs. Solves practical problems and deals effectively with situations where only limited standardization exists. Regularly required to use initiative and make independent judgments. Ability to work at a fast pace in a multi-task environment. Ability to adapt to high-pressure situations and accurate typing are required. Minimum Position Requirements: Experience: Extensive phone/PBX experience. Preferred Position Qualifications: Education: Some college. Experience: Extensive experience in a customer-oriented environment. Lead or Supervisory experience in the patient access department. Medical terminology and computer experience.
